The Ashford, Folkestone and Romney Marsh Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is pleased to announce its annual award of the 2014 Pub of the Year to the Firkin Ale House of Cheriton Place, Folkestone. It won through from a shortlist of eight pubs with members of the branch visiting each and scoring them on six criteria:

  • Quality of Real Ale and Real Cider/Perry
  • Atmosphere/Style/Decor
  • Service/Welcome
  • Community focus
  • Sympathy with CAMRA objectives
  • And good value for mone

Bob Martin, Branch Chairman, said "Though the Firkin Ale House, the first Micro Pub in the Branch's area, has only been open for less than 18 months, Neil King, the proprietor, has done an outstanding job serving quality Real Ales and Real Ciders mainly from Kentish breweries, in stylish premises with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere."

There is no lager served, or music played and the use of a mobile phone incurs a penalty of a minimum of £1.00 to the charity box. This has encouraged a mature and friendly clientele where conversation can take place and be heard!!

The award was formally presented at the Firkin Ale House on Monday, 7 April 2014.
